A program of the Deep River Science Academy

Divisions and Categories

Projects at the regional science fair are grouped into categories by grade, and divisions based on the project's subject. As well all science fair projects are one of three types.

Age Categories

  • Grade 6
  • Junior (Grades 7 and 8)
  • Intermediate (Grades 9 and 10)
  • Senior (Grades 11 and 12)

Project Divisions

It is important to place your project in the right division. If you are unsure of which division to enter, contact us with a description of your project and we'll help out.

Physical Science

A Physical Science project is one that has as its primary objective a consideration of the cause and effect of any non biological process or activity. Mathematics projects are also included in this category

Life Science

A Life Science project attends to some aspect of the life or lifestyle of a non-human organism.

A life science project is one that focuses on the role a biological process, plays in an organism. If the focus is on the chemistry of the process, it would be more appropriate to choose the physical science division.

Engineering and Computer Science

An engineering project involves to design and/or physical construction of some device, appliance, machine or process, etc., that has an application.

Engineering projects focus on applying scientific and technical knowledge to the creation of some product. If the creation of an apparatus was central to the project, then the project belongs in engineering, if the creation of an apparatus was merely for the purpose of conducting an experiment with it, the project probably belongs in the appropriate division for that experiment.

Health Science

A health sciences project examines some biomedical and/or clinical aspect of human life or lifestyle and its translation into improved health for humans, or more effective health services and products. Projects related to the health of specific populations, societal and cultural dimensions of health, and environmental influences on health are also included in this division.

Note: Projects involving human subjects must follow certain regulations. For more information look at our resources.
